The medieval rock relief, known as the "Madara horseman", is located above the modern village of Madara, 15 km east of the city of Shumen. It is the only rock relief in Europe from the early medieval period, dated according to the accompanying Greek inscriptions to the XNUMXth century.
For the first time, the Hungarian horseman was documented and described by the Hungarian explorer of the Bulgarian lands, Felix Kanitz, in 1872.
The Madar horseman was included in the list of UNESCO's world cultural heritage in 1979. The main challenges for the protection of the rock relief are related to natural processes - acid rain, temperature amplitudes, the action of winds, etc.
