
After a competition held by the Ministry of Culture, Assoc. Dr. Bonni Petrunova was re-elected as director of the National History Museum. For the past five years, she has been the director of the museum, following the retirement of its previous head Prof. Bozhidar Dimitrov in 2017.

After a competition held by the Ministry of Culture, Assoc. Dr. Bonni Petrunova was re-elected as director of the National History Museum. For the past five years, she has been the director of the museum, following the retirement of its previous head, Prof. Bozhidar Dimitrov, in 2017. She was initially appointed as an acting director, and in 2018 she won the announced competition.
Before the commission, Prof. Petrunova gave an overview of the goals set and the results achieved for the period of her first mandate, during which access to the museum was restricted for visitors due to the pandemic caused by the COVID 19 virus. Prof. Petrunova emphasized that despite the force majeure that occurred circumstances, under her leadership, the museum was able to cope with the consequences. She managed to keep the museum team going during the pandemic, despite serious financial losses. During the pandemic, the museum was able to make international contacts and prepare the participation of Bulgarian treasures and artifacts in international exhibitions.
The international exhibition "The First Rulers of Europe" was recently opened at the Field Museum, Chicago with the participation of three Bulgarian museums: National History Museum, Regional History Museum - Ruse and Regional History Museum - Varna. The National History Museum, under the leadership of Associate Professor Petrunova, occupies a central place in the preparation and coordination of the Bulgarian participation in Chicago with some of its most emblematic treasures.
Assoc. Dr. Bonni Petrunova was ranked first after presenting her concept for the development of the largest museum institution in Bulgaria. She emphasized the importance of a better and permanent positioning of the National History Museum on the international museum scene, its inclusion in European projects and development of the institution in sync with the new trends in modern museology.
