On 13 April 2005, the European Parliament approved the signing of the Accession Treaty. The report on Bulgaria was adopted with 534 votes "for", 88 "against" and 69 "abstentions".

At a solemn ceremony in the palace of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg on April 25, 2005, the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Georgi Parvanov, the Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburgotski, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Solomon Passy and the Minister of European Affairs Meglena Kuneva signed the official document.
Since January 1, 2007, Bulgaria is a full member of the European Union.
