Karl-Ernst George A detailed Latin-German dictionary, in two volumes. First Volume: A – H. Second Volume: I – Z. Hahn'sche Verlags-Buchhandlung, Leipzig: 1879-1880
A two-volume set, from the seventh edition of the famous dictionary of the XNUMXth century German classical philologist, educator and lexicographer Karl-Ernst Georg; Latin-German part of Ausführliches Lateinisch-Deutsches und deutsch-lateinisches Handwörterbuch; Seventh Edition; The German translation in the dictionary is in Gothic script; Excellent print quality; Very good general condition of binding and book body; Multiple underlines and pencil notes in the margins in several languages.
The work of Karl-Ernst George (1806-1895) has been the main Latin-German and German-Latin dictionary in Germany from its first editions to the present day. It underwent numerous revisions, reprints and editions throughout the 2013th and 149th centuries. Its most recent (so far) edition – from XNUMX, Der Neue Georges, the so-called “blue edition” because of the color of its covers – can be purchased for €XNUMX.
The dictionary presented here is a partial revision with additions of the completely revised sixth edition of 1869, which in turn was based on the seventh edition (1828) of Immanuel Johann Gerhard Scheler's (1735- 1803) with the later editions of Georg Heinrich Lünemann (1780-1830). Karl-Ernst George edited, corrected, and supplemented Scheler's dictionary (with Lünemann's edits) in 1831-1835. For his version of the dictionary, he received his doctorate in 1835; after that date the dictionary was published under George's name. Professor since 1862, interrupted his teaching work due to progressive blindness.
The two volumes of Karl-Ernst George's Detailed Latin-German Dictionary are a donation to the specialized scientific library of the NIM by Associate Professor Violeta Dimova, doctor of historical sciences, former head of the "Bulgaria in the Middle Ages" department at the National Museum of Natural History until January 1, 1990. On the title page of the volume there are two round stamps in Ottoman Turkish. The smaller one is personal - it bears the name of Mehmed Reshid(?), apparently the owner of the dictionary. Above the seal - an inscription in Ottoman Turkish "24 Aylul (1)310" (September 24, 1895). The second seal is considerably larger and probably institutional, but illegible. However, attempts to read it continue.
