Ivanovo rock churches

For the first time, the world's scientific community learned about the rock churches near the village of Ivanovo in 1914, when their existence was announced by Karel Shkorpil in his work "Description of Antiquities Along the Stream of Rusenski Lom".

In 1979, this monastery complex was included in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.

The problems of conservation of rock churches are significant. The main one is related to the instability of the rock massif. Additional problems are created by polluted air and rainwater penetrating into some of the rooms, as well as the development of microorganisms in the painting layer. The preservation of the complex is entrusted to the Regional Historical Museum in Ruse.
