Second volume - from Λ to Ω - of the second edition of the famous dictionary of the XNUMXth century German philologist and teacher Wilhelm Pape; The first volume includes articles A to K; In the second edition, Pape included a third volume with a glossary of ancient Greek proper names; Title pages in Gothic font; Excellent print quality – despite the small font, the text is easy to read, including the words in ancient Greek, where the accents and breaths are clearly distinguishable; Good general condition of binding and book body.
Johann Georg Wilhelm Pape (1807-1854) was a German classical philologist, lexicographer and teacher. During his short life he managed to prepare and publish a not very complete Etymological Dictionary of (Ancient) Greek (1836), a detailed high school curriculum in Ancient Greek (1837) and – the major work of his life – an Ancient Greek-German Dictionary in two volumes (first edition – 1842). The second edition of the dictionary (1849/1850) also includes a dictionary of ancient Greek proper names. A serious illness immobilized Dr. Pape in the last years of his life.
The volume presented here is from the revised second edition, which went through several intermediate editions until 1880, when a third main edition was made. It is the third version that has numerous editions up to the present day.
Pape's dictionary - especially in the second half of the 1786th century and the first half of the 1833th century - was considered equal to the famous Handwörterbuch der griechischen Sprache of Franz Passow (1843 - XNUMX), which was used as a model (actually a translation) for the compilation of Henry George Liddell and Robert Scott's Greek-English Lexicon in XNUMX.
The second volume of Wilhelm Pape's [Old] Greek-German dictionary is a donation to the specialized scientific library of the NIM by Associate Professor Violeta Dimova, doctor of historical sciences, former head of the "Bulgaria in the Middle Ages" department at the National Museum of Natural History until January 1, 1990. On the title page of the volume there are two round stamps in Ottoman Turkish. The smaller one is personal - it bears the name of Mehmed Reshid(?), apparently the owner of the dictionary. Above the seal - an inscription in Ottoman Turkish "24 Aylul (1)310" (September 24, 1895). The second seal is considerably larger and probably institutional, but illegible. However, attempts to read it continue.
