Already in the first days of archaeological excavations, researchers came across traces of wall paintings. Archaeologists discovered a new Christian temple in the citadel of Kokalyanski Urvich.

The work is aimed at uncovering the fortress wall of the citadel, and the site was chosen because of an old mining excavation. Before long it became clear that a new Christian temple had been opened. Until now, only one was known, located in the lower part of the fortification. His research began in 1969 by Prof. Dimitar Ovcharov. The new Christian building is in a bad state, but despite the damage of time, on the inner walls, there are still preserved fragments of the decoration. The arch at the entrance was made of bricks and stones.

The team, including restorers from the NIM IEFEM-BAS laboratory, is hopeful about the results of the studies.
The work will continue until the end of July under a project of the National Museum of Natural History with funding from the Culture Directorate of the Capital City Municipality, the National History Museum recalls.
